Ready, Set, Collaborate

Mission Possible or Mission Impossible? This was the question given at the start of our class. How can we use Blackboard tools to make it mission possible? What collaborative tools do students already use in their lives? How can we use these tools in the classroom.

Social Media

Facebook – place to get together

Why is it attractive – spontaneous, sharing info, automated communication tool,

Can it be used in an academic setting? – yes, collaborating in groups, study abroad groups meet ahead of time and get to know each other (build a community)

Does it encourage good teaching practice? yes to some extent

Does it make good pedagogical sense? yes to some extent (good points and bad, use for certain instances)

Social Media – Food for Thought

if you build it they will come – not always (Myspace)

no one tool to rule them all – it’s about the learning objective

be the social authority – pick and choose what works will for you class.

Food for thought

We have been collaborating since the beginning of time

Online learning does not = collaboration

Can be done in both Synchronous and Asynchronous

We are teaching  the new era and there is a new 21st century pedagogy that we are going to need to use to reach and engage these students.
